Murielle Rioux
Biography
Murielle Rioux worked in the film production industry for over 10 years with the National Film Board of Canada. In 2011, she left her position to travel the world. Over the course of eight years, she visited around twenty countries, immersing herself in different cultures, cuisines, and, of course, art. Today, she draws inspiration from these experiences and seeks to convey her emotions onto the canvas.
It was at the beginning of the pandemic that visual arts took on a central role in her life, evolving from a hobby into a more serious and consistent artistic practice. As a self-taught artist, she continues to develop her skills through online resources, virtual workshops, and the influence of artists who have inspired her throughout her travels.
She lives and creates her art in Dieppe, New Brunswick. Her practice is constantly evolving, fueled by a strong curiosity and an interest in a wide range of artistic styles. Her works often reflect a blend of influences, moving between abstraction and intuition. Her subjects emerge throughout the creative process — as she says, “it is the canvas that eventually reveals the subject to me!”
Artist statement
My artistic process is rooted in an intuitive and experimental approach. I begin each painting without a preconceived idea, allowing space for spontaneity and free expression through gesture. Paint, collage papers, pencils, and other mediums are layered without a specific direction. Gradually, the canvas becomes a space for dialogue: it guides me, suggests forms, and points me toward paths to explore.
This process, both organic and playful, transforms each creation into a unique experience where the unexpected plays a central role.
My work moves between abstraction, figuration, and naïveté, depending on what I discover within the piece. As my practice continues to evolve, I draw inspiration from a wide range of artistic and stylistic influences. Each painting becomes a reflection of a blend of visual languages, a sense of freedom, and the joy of creating that I hope to share with the viewer.
