This series of female portraits was created for a women’s charity event as a celebration of the strength, resilience, and complexity of women. Through painting, I explore the many layers of feminine emotion, from vulnerability and reflection to confidence, strength, and power. While every woman carries her own story and experiences, there is a shared sense of strength and connection that brings us together.
As an Acadian visual artist from New Brunswick, my practice is deeply rooted in storytelling, community, and a desire to bring local people and their stories into contemporary art spaces. Much of my work explores Maritime culture through expressive portraits and narrative scenes, celebrating the people, traditions, and everyday moments that shape coastal communities. This series allowed me to turn that same attention toward women and the stories held within their faces.
The eyes became a central focus throughout these portraits. A gaze can communicate what words cannot, it can reveal vulnerability, confidence, memory, resilience, and power. I wanted each portrait to feel as though the woman is meeting the viewer directly, creating a moment of connection between the subject and the person looking back at her.
My work is influenced by the people and places that have shaped me. Growing up in a French Acadian community, I was surrounded by generations of family members who worked creatively through painting, wood carving, graphic design, and craftsmanship. That environment taught me to see art not only as a form of expression, but also as a way of preserving stories, identity, and culture.
Through bold colour, expressive brushwork, and layered texture, I seek to transform familiar experiences into something that invites viewers to pause and look more closely. Whether I am painting a fisherman returning to shore, neighbours sharing a moment, or a woman looking directly at the viewer, I am interested in the quiet stories that exist within everyday life.
This series is ultimately a celebration of women, their individuality, their emotions, their stories, and their strength. Although our experiences may be different, there is something universal in the way we carry our stories within us. Through these portraits, I hope to honour that shared strength and create space for women to be seen, heard, and recognized for the powerful stories they hold.
