Thomas Vienneau
Thomas Vienneau’s use of figurative art, abstraction, and expressionism allows him to push the boundaries of his artistic practice. Through these styles, his work takes a critical look at mental health, queer experiences, and political issues, drawing inspiration from both introspection and the stories of others.
Over the years, Thomas has developed a signature style that he describes as grotesque and whimsical, yet colourful and uplifting. His work explores human suffering, personal journeys, and hope. While themes and subject matter may vary, his methodology remains consistent. Each work begins with a conceptualized image shaped by emotion, thought, or experience. The painting then takes form on canvas through either watercolour-style acrylic washes or heavy impasto.
When creating a series, Thomas uses recurring themes, styles, and colours to connect the individual works. His landscapes often represent emotional states, while his figurative works allow stories to unfold or focus on particular individuals. His gestural and abstract pieces can be understood as snapshots of a thought or emotional moment.
